I've Caught the Blues
I’ve caught the blues is a book created in response to quarantine times. I never knew what depression felt like before COVID. I’ve recently been struggling to get out of bed and had no motivation to be productive. Making art has been challenging, usually, ideas just flow out of my head.
One of my favorite professors once talked about a really challenging time in her life. She would just go into the color darkroom and make the color blue over and over again. In different temperatures different brightnesses, different saturations. She couldn’t get herself to do anything else.
I feel similarly right now.
Blue is a big part of my work. I work with cyanotypes, a chemical combination of Ferric Ammonium Citrate and Potassium Ferricyanide that when exposed to the sun turns this very specific shade of blue. Hence the perfect medium for this project.
All I could think about was how I can’t get out of bed to make this book. So I just stayed in bed photographing myself over time.
